About

Addis Energy develops a subsurface process for producing ammonia from iron-rich resources, using the Earth itself as a chemical reactor. Developed out of MIT's Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the technology leverages oil and gas techniques to inject engineered fluids that harness the chemical and thermal potential of subsurface iron. The chemical potential of iron splits water into hydrogen and oxygen, and the hydrogen then reacts to produce ammonia through a process that is cheaper and less energy-intensive than traditional ammonia production. This approach replaces the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process, targeting energy abundance and affordability while reducing carbon intensity. Founded in 2024 and headquartered in Somerville, Massachusetts, Addis Energy has raised approximately $12.7M in seed funding from investors including Engine Ventures, Blindspot Ventures, Voyager, Pillar VC, ARPA-E, and At One Ventures.
