Alt Carbon

Alt Carbon provides carbon dioxide removal services through enhanced rock weathering, accelerating a natural geological process that traps CO2 in soil and transports it to oceans for 10,000+ year storage. The company spreads its proprietary Hari Mati—a combination of organic inputs and silicate-rich amendments—on agricultural land, enabling CO2 to be mineralized and permanently locked away while simultaneously increasing crop yields. This dual-benefit approach addresses both carbon removal and agricultural productivity. Alt Carbon's first project is based in Darjeeling, India, which experiences some of the highest natural weathering rates in the world, where climate change is threatening the region's famed tea estates. The project aims to revive agricultural land while sequestering carbon at scale. The company's mission is to remove 5 million tons of CO2 by 2030, addressing the IPCC's assessment that limiting global warming to 1.5°C requires not only emission reductions but also removal of historic CO2 at scale and speed. Alt Carbon also operates Alt Labs for research and development and publishes Alter Magazine for climate education. Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Bengaluru, India, the company has raised approximately $12.6 million at the Seed stage from investors including Shastra, ACT Grants, PointOne Capital, and Indian Silicon Valley Capital.
