About

Carbon Upcycling (CUT) manufactures advanced carbon-based building materials by converting locally sourced industrial byproducts into clean, high-quality supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) using a proprietary process that incorporates captured CO2. The company CUT CO2 System uses a mechanically assisted chemical exfoliation process that enhances feedstock surface area using flue gas, combining local low-grade materials such as steel slag, clay, and legacy coal ash with CO2 to produce CO2-enhanced cementitious materials. This technology addresses the critical supply chain challenge facing the cement industry as traditional sources of SCMs dwindle, providing scalable, local solutions that enhance supply chain stability, strengthen margins, and reduce emissions. The technology enables cement manufacturers to reduce clinker content by up to 50%, tap into local underutilized feedstocks for predictable production, and achieve up to 60% carbon emissions reduction while generating environmental attributes for voluntary carbon markets, compliance markets, or book-and-claim systems. Carbon Upcycling is deploying its flagship commercial-scale CUT CO2 System at the Ash Grove Mississauga Cement Plant in Ontario, Canada, where it will produce high-quality cementitious material from locally sourced steel slag while sequestering CO2 emissions captured from the plant kiln flue gas stack. The company was selected for the 2026 Holcim MAQER Ventures Accelerator and has secured financing from ATEL Ventures. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in Calgary, Canada, with offices in Ithaca, New York, and London, United Kingdom, Carbon Upcycling has raised approximately $50.9 million in Series A funding from investors including CRH Ventures, CEMEX Ventures, TITAN, Oxy, BDC, Clean Energy Ventures, ERA, Climate Investment, Builders Vision, and Zero Carbon Capital. The company employs approximately 56 people.
