About

Colorifix is a biotechnology company that develops microbial-based textile dyeing solutions, using engineered microorganisms to produce and fix pigments onto textiles as a sustainable alternative to conventional chemical dyeing. The company's biological process works in five stages: first, identifying a living organism that naturally produces a desired color from plants, animals, insects, or microbes; second, using online DNA databases to pinpoint the exact genes responsible for pigment production without needing physical specimens; third, building the DNA and inserting it into Colorifix microbes that act as tiny biological factories; fourth, growing the engineered microbes in fermentors using non-hazardous ingredients including agricultural by-products rich in sugars, peptides, and salts; and fifth, pumping the entire fermentor contents into standard industrial dyeing machines with yarn, fabric, or garments, leveraging existing industrial equipment. This groundbreaking solution drastically reduces environmental harm by avoiding harsh chemicals while upholding industry standards for quality, addressing the devastating environmental impact of traditional textile coloration. Colorifix partners with forward-thinking fashion brands including PANGAIA, H&M, and Vollebak, and has been recognized with the Earthshot Prize. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Norwich, United Kingdom, Colorifix has raised $49.4M in Series B funding from investors including Europa, SAGANA, Cambridge Enterprise, Primera Capital, H&M Group Ventures, Regeneration.VC, University of Cambridge, Bombyx, SynBioVen, PDS, GOLDWIN, Youngone Corporation, WENVEST Capital, Innovation for Impact, The Mills Fabrica, Fashion For Good, H&M Group, Future Fund, and Bukaty Fa.
