About

Metalenz designs and manufactures meta-optic materials and metasurface optics that transform light for next-generation sensing applications across consumer electronics, smart robotics, and automotive markets. As the first company to commercialize metasurface optics, Metalenz replaces traditional refractive and diffractive lens stacks with a single flat metalens fabricated using standard semiconductor manufacturing processes, enabling complete control over the intensity, phase, and polarization of every photon of light. The company product portfolio includes Polar ID, a full system solution for smartphone biometrics and face authentication that works under the phone display, eliminating the need for display cutouts; and Polar 3D, which delivers relightable selfies and realistic avatars on-device from a single image. Metalenz meta-optics achieve 4x improvement in signal-to-noise ratio in 3D imaging systems compared to traditional diffractive optics, with extreme temperature stability enabling worry-free reflow soldering. The multifunctional meta-optics replace entire sets of refractive and diffractive lenses, reducing the cost of lens integration, assembly, and alignment. Built on research from the Capasso Lab at Harvard University with an exclusive worldwide license to foundational IP, Metalenz holds 150+ patents on innovations that simplify and improve optical devices. The company has partnered with UMC for mass production of Polar ID and signed a license agreement with STMicroelectronics to accelerate metasurface optics adoption. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, Metalenz has raised approximately $47.4 million in Series B funding from investors including NeoTribe, Foothill Ventures, M Ventures, Intel Capital, Osage University Partners, TDK Ventures, 3M, Global Brain, SGInnovate, Baidu Ventures, Braemar Energy Ventures, Applied Materials, and TSVC. The company employs approximately 42 people.
