About

Nostromo develops ice thermal energy storage systems for commercial buildings and data centers, using surplus power generated during off-peak periods to store cold thermal energy in the form of ice, which is then used during peak hours for cooling. The company's flagship IceBrick system is a compact, modular, and 100% safe energy storage solution that fits in otherwise unusable spaces like rooftops and basements, using water as the storage medium. The system is managed by Cirrus, a cloud-based AI and machine learning platform that optimizes not only the use of stored energy but the entire cooling plant, leveraging advanced forecasting and real-time monitoring to dispatch energy exactly when and as needed through robust onsite controls. IceBrick provides multiple operational benefits: breaking peak power limits to boost capacity, efficiency, and resilience; providing N+1/N+2 redundancy for critical infrastructure; and enabling participation in energy markets through load management and capacity services as part of a virtual power plant (VPP). Nostromo offers the IceBrick system through a fully-financed Energy Storage as-a-Service (ESaaS) program with zero upfront cost, supported by a conditional loan commitment from the US DOE. The company addresses the fact that the grid only utilizes 53% of its capacity due to load variability caused mainly by cooling, and that curtailing peak loads 1% of the time can enable the grid to serve more than 100 GW of new loads with existing infrastructure. For data centers, where typical waiting time for power is 3-5 years, IceBrick can dramatically reduce time to power by making cooling loads flexible. Founded in 2016 and headquartered in Even Yehuda, Israel, Nostromo has raised approximately $23.2 million in a Series B round backed by Migdal Group, Freepoint, and Startupbootcamp Australia.
