Rubi Laboratories is a climate technology and advanced materials company that creates biobased textiles from captured carbon emissions, removing CO2 from the atmosphere while using virtually zero water and zero land. Inspired by nature, Rubi uses the same biological machinery as plants — enzymes — to capture CO2 and convert it into cellulose, the strong polymer that plants produce and that humans have traditionally extracted through energy-intensive, polluting processes. The resulting textiles are the same material already used in apparel, biodegrade at end-of-life, and are produced through a net carbon-negative, water-neutral, and land-neutral process. One pair of jeans made with Rubi textiles avoids and captures approximately 20 bathtubs of CO2. The company targets the fashion and apparel industry, which is the third most CO2-polluting supply chain on the planet, offering a drop-in sustainable alternative to conventional textile production. Rubi has been featured in press including coverage of its partnership with Walmart for carbon-capture apparel, and its co-founders were honored in the Business of Fashion 500. Founded in 2020 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, the company has raised approximately $25.8 million in Series A funding. Investors include Talis Capital, H&M Group Ventures, Tin Shed Ventures, Necessary Ventures, Collab Fund, and Climactic.
