Sophia Space is a space technology company that develops orbital compute infrastructure and data centers powered by solar energy. The company's core innovation is the TILE architecture (Thermal Integrated LEO Edge), which unifies power, compute, and thermal management into a modular unit where every watt is driven into compute and every unit of heat is radiated at the point of generation. Each TILE has its own dedicated solar panel providing continuous energy and can be configured with various storage options. The thermal management system eliminates active cooling, reducing complexity and weight. The technology addresses the growing demand for in-orbit compute as satellite deployments and commercial space activity increase, enabling local data processing rather than transmitting everything back to Earth. Sophia Space has secured a U.S. patent with Caltech for space-based data centers and paired with Apex for an orbital computing demonstration. The team comprises former NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Microsoft, and commercial computing experts. Founded in 2025 and headquartered in Pasadena, California, Sophia Space has raised $22.0M in Seed funding from investors including Unlock Venture Partners, KDDI, and SparkLabs Group.
