Overview
M-KOPA is an African fintech that bundles affordable smartphone and other device ownership with financial services, letting customers pay for smartphones, solar home systems, and household goods through flexible daily, weekly, or monthly installments rather than a large upfront purchase. As customers build a track record of consistent payments, typically after around three months, they unlock access to additional digital loans, plus optional add-ons such as health insurance, device protection plans, and affordable data bundles, all underwritten using machine-learning credit scoring built on mobile-money repayment data rather than traditional credit files. The company operates across Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, targeting underbanked, everyday earners including small business owners and entrepreneurs, and reports serving more than 10 million customers and deploying over $2 billion in credit to date. M-KOPA is backed by investors including Sumitomo and Standard Bank.
