Shellworks

Shellworks is a biotechnology company that develops sustainable alternatives to plastic packaging through its proprietary biomaterial called VIVOMER. Made from plant waste through a natural microbial fermentation process, VIVOMER behaves like traditional plastic during use but is fully biodegradable, leaving no microplastics, phthalates, BPA, or PFAS behind. The material is compatible with existing plastic manufacturing equipment including injection moulding, blow moulding, and extrusion, and is FDA and EU 10/2011 certified for food contact. Shellworks has shipped over 8 million products, diverting 240 tonnes of plastic, with manufacturing sites in the UK, EU, and US. The material has been tested across 400 formulations for pack integrity, freeze-thaw resistance, UV exposure, and accelerated ageing, maintaining shelf stability for over 3 years. Founded in 2018 and headquartered in London, United Kingdom, Shellworks has raised $22.1M in Series A funding from investors including LocalGlobe, Alter Equity, JamJar Investments, Founder Collective, Third Sphere, True Global, and BoxGroup.
